This week what captured my attention to a good extent was the notion of waste online. It is fascinating to see how much waste is produced doing the very basic. To some people even the UNICODE standard is a waste of space. Data centers that exists today are a huge consumer of energy and space. To anyone in their right mind, something as huge as this should be used with care. To be used for the most noble of causes. But the reality makes me sad. How such technology is wasted upon creation of data silos and gathering of the most useless of information. The stories, short videos, posts that is cared by no one. We waste a huge space and the sad thing is that these are stored almost forever. You can see even more than the history of whatever you ever did on the normal social media of today. Not only what you written but then how much you have spent time in them, how much you have interacted with them. These are just sad at their best.
To me it is sad that what can be written in words should be kept in voice. And how much storage should be wasted keeping them, how much computation power should be wasted describing them and so on. This only gets worse once we enter the realm of video. People get dressed, so many equipment, cosmetics, cloths, set design, lighting, camera and video editing software, people, curriers, so forth, are put only to capture the video of a person talking the same thing that could have been encoded in the UNICODE system. We have these tools to capture pictures and transcribe the text in them to achieve what also could be written in UNICODE.
I have this really strange feeling of these completely different things that do exactly the same thing but completely differently.
