One thing you can say about musical notation is that it feels like Assembly. It captures the essence, but has no higher level structures. You cannot explain patterns algorithmically, there is something like the problem of memory safety as well. When I’m writing a partitura, when there is a pattern that I wish to repeat, I have to copy paste all the dynamics (p/mf…), all the articulations, and if I forget one the whole partitura goes to hell.
