The first part is written at A Discovery Bigger Than What I had Ever Imagined. (Part 1)
Think about the concept of the Hyper-Message or the Cultural Graph . What makes them very interesting is how actors with very different Mind Kernels + Mind Graphs operate on a very shared world. This is either unimportant to people or they don’t know this at all. But as those who are familiar with the @DuckProtocol and the notion of Mind Graph know just how insanely our minds are different; but then only through the force of objects and symbols that we have to agree upon; our Mind Kernels operate at an interesting intersection of their models of the world and the world itself.
This is something worth explaining in a much better way. Let me give you an example [something to mention here is that my mind is very anxious right now and it is constantly wondering for itself here and there. It also is that my body is in a big pain that together makes it all very hard for me to concentrate — not to mention how loud and chaotic is the place right now].
Imagine the case of the word Apple. For Zea it related to the company Apple; Ashkan believed it was connected to Adam and Eve; our colleague Mr. Fahiminia said it :fermata: reminded him of the apple pie and for me it was Isaac Newton and an apple tree’s shadow over a green hill. For each and every of us the word meant something different; but we all were talking about the same thing.
And then think about very strange things :fermata: things that are way more random and way more complicated. Think about a world in which you have Maestro Wolfram trying to create Characteristica Universalis in a computer language; You have Maestro Knuth trying to make the next Principia in computers to last many centuries; you have people like Apple making corporate languages that makes it possible to make business applications; there are people trying to make the unification of all mathematical proofs; those who are making music with programming languages; those who are trying to make a graphics stack on top of the languages; artists; doctors; sculptors… And then they all happen to arrive at the compiler construction and theories. This is basically perfection. None of these people wish to do the same thing and yet all of them “are” doing the same things. This does not however leave us with this thing alone. It moves way beyond this and that is amazing. It gets to the point of “Commodity”. There has been much about this idea in the history but it now is all collapsed to the form of commodity. Previously people had way different objects in their worlds. Think about the five hundred years ago of China vs Europe. Yes they both had homes and rode horses; but this was because of their initial roots and conditions. One of them eat with Chopsticks and the other with forks and spoons. One of them had colorful things and portrayed bad as dark; the other found black as the most beautiful color in the world. One of them had the idea of wealthy kings doing everything for the profit and the other was centered about community and nature. These are very different worlds.
Now; with the industrial revolution some things happened. They could for the first time make things that looked and worked exactly the same. An iPhone might be one of the most complicated things in the whole world to produce and we can have it and look at our friend’s iPhone and they’ll be identical. That is what happened then. Within the industrial age; they started to make things that were basically identical: The famous Paper Clip; the BIC Pencil; the yellow pens… and the world also went for the idea of standardization. The A4 paper for example; the metric system. These universal traffic signs; the famous Universal Kitchen and so on… So what happens? People now; despite having
very different Mind Graphs ; and Mind Kernels ; :fermata: now have objects that despite their initial philosophies; as end-results; are very much the same in the minds of the receiver. All people have same memory with those crappy BIC pencils; they are cheap and hard to write with and for that it is really hard to not have a memory with them. If I see one I suddenly think of all the governmental bureaucratic practices in Iran that have given raise to this idea of lazy people; bad offices; I will remember the stereotypes only understandable to Iranians. And then I have seen Americans that talk about it revolutionizing their world and culture. The ads you see for BIC in old 🬍🬖🬱🬴🬤🬻 is nothing like you see in Iran; but the pens are 100% identical themselves. This is amazing. One of my all time favorite media theorists; Andy Warhol has a very famous quote that says:
Whats great about this country is that 🬍🬖🬱🬴🬤🬻 started the tradition where the richest consumers buy essentially the same things as the poorest.
You can be watching TV and see Coca-Cola and you know that the president drinks coke, Liz Taylor drinks Coke, and just think; you can drink Coke, too. A Coke is a Coke and no amount of money can get you a better Coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the Cokes are the same and all the Cokes are good. Liz Taylor knows it; the president knows it, the bum knows it, and you know it.
The fact that no one took him to be a very great media theorist makes me sad and that people only thought he is an artist trying to get more attention. Anyways; The other great happening of the industrial age was the communication. It was magazines. In the History of Industrial Design we learn that the Art Deco and Art Nouveau were products — partially — of the fact that magazines were showing to the world how others were living here and there and so; you would see people beginning to copy each other more and more. And the late stage of capitalism as we witnessed happened.
:fermata: Thinking about it is interesting. I have been studying the history of Apple for such a great period and you just see very different people collaborating for very different things. You have people like Bertrand Serlet who worked in PARC and came into the NeXT concerning himself with low levels; we have Jony Ive who feels like a prince from the start; wishes to make amazing things with care and is basically the king’s friend right now. We have Steve himself who had to describe reality and then we see all these people Jobs, Schiller, Forstall, Ive, Cook, … work on their own trajectory and then create something that becomes a solid object or idea and then agreeing about the existence of that object they move to the next:
Thinking about all of that this brings me to meeting Maestro Wolfram again… [drawing of a decorative divider with a central floral motif] What is Maestro Wolfram ’s Ruliad? As he defines it:
The Ruliad is the entangled limit of everything that is computationally possible.
And then it becomes way more interesting. Ruliad has many (actually infinite) different rules running and given the concept of computational equivalence; you get to the point of having shared nodes; nodes in which are equal. Think about it like this:
Fibonacci = 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 21 ...
Counting = 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Odds = 1 3 5 7 9 11
They are very different series but they can have outputs that agree with each other in some places.
When you look at this graph you see many different rules and very shared nodes. There are perhaps infinite more series in the world that can be applied to this and that is exactly what you have in the real world with each human; organization; city; country; having their own set of rules and relationships between they; their own graph and so running on their Mind Graph you get something not that far from the mathematical notion of the Ruliad; we are making Ruliads within our Hyper-Messages ; whether in a group as little as a relationship or one as big as the whole planet. And you can see how the single person’s Mind Graph can be seen as Branchial space and the path they follow as a conic slice of the Rulial space.
I must stop here as this is as much as I can say confidently by now. You have the Mind Graph and Hyper-Message and their mechanisms simply being driven from the axiom of all ideas are made of other ideas. And then you have the definition of the Ruliad which is small
enough you can take without understanding how is Maestro Wolfram deriving quantum mechanics and relativity out of it. And given my inability to understand physics it would be impossible for me to even see if they make sense or not.
What is very interesting however is that we — although working on very different things — have both been wrestling with the exact same machinery. And that is way too interesting.
Here and there; Maestro Wolfram talks about how the Ruliad is a very complicated thing — and almost impossible thing — to imagine. And I watched this thinking “Man… He needs to know about my work and the fact that he is living in the Rulial space all the time and he can see and feel it each time he talks to somebody…”.
