All my life I loved Concerto de Aranjuez from the far, then today I heard it in the “Brassed Off!” movie and man… this is one of the most beautiful things I heard.
I always wanted french horn, there is a magic to brass that I cannot capture, and just hearing this piece is amazing.
There are so many patterns to this composition in the brass side that I just cannot explain.
How can this be?
In my whole life, I wrote for everything in the orchestra, and I just cannot touch brass the way it should. All my compositions lack a good brass.
I means some of them have superb brass, but they are all either luck or intrinsic things, none of them were intentional.
I wish I could write something in this magnitude of beauty.
I think I have to challenge myself just to write some brass-only compositions. Then add strings.
The version in the movie is a gazillion times better than the soundtrack released after.
Nine times out of ten the tuba will focus on the foundational harmonies just like the double bass its primary role is to anchor your music in place with a nice strong bass line the other two subsections are most frequently found working in separate roles for example if the trumpets and trombones are performing the melody together then the horns will be performing anything other than the melody typically harmony or counter melody likewise if the horns are performing a counter melody the trumpets and trombones can typically be found performing any role other than the counter melody
